Talking As Fast As I Can
âIf youâre meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, youâve already set the bar too high.â Lauren Graham
If, like me, you have also been looking to fill this giant gaping Stars Hollow shaped hole in your life, this is the book to cozy in with next. âTalking As Fast As I Canâ, by Lauren Graham is an autobiography that travels into her trials and tribulations of trying to be an actress in New York, the odd jobs in college that eventually got her there, the âfashion-induced blackoutâ phase of her life and a quick interlude about why it is absolutely alright to brag about being an REI shopper. Itâs short, honest, fast-paced and humorous.
As the chapters fly by, you can hear Lorelai Gilmoreâs voice narrating this, as fast as she can, of course. Her writing style is conversational and scattered. Pretty much like you would be when you talk to your best friend, not afraid to abruptly end a sentence and jump into a song and then whine about why there arenât ever enough vacation days and then tangent into some highly urgent wardrobe decisions.
Two chapters on the filming of Gilmore Girls are noteworthy. In âWhat was it like, Part Iâ, Graham re-watches the original series and makes comments on the elements she liked. I wish there were more of that in the book. In âWhat was it like, Part IIâ, there was a lot more meat about the detailed shooting specifics and challenges that came with it. I found a lot of bookmark-worthy pages in this book but I think my favorite bit would be about how she tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres. It makes her a remarkably relatable celebrity, which is quite genuine and rare.
If by the end of the book you donât realize that Lauren Graham is your spirit animal, then you clearly need more coffee. Caffeinate. Re-read.
